Student-Centered

Our biggest focus is always going to be the students themselves. The initiatives contained in the toolkit are what are going to serve students best at this time.

Intersectional

Our experiences are a unique confluence of the identities we hold and how others perceive us. To be truly equitable is to ensure that all programs and initiatives meet the needs of all students in a way that is conscious of – and responsive to – the historical and current oppressive systems that impact students’ lives, utilizing the assets that students’ bring through their personal and ancestral histories.

Data-Informed

We take a human-first approach in our work and that means working with empirical data alongside the incredible life experiences of our students. We take them both into account when doing this work.

Comprehensive

The TRANScend Toolkit takes a micro- and macro- approach to this work. It includes many initiatives that can better support trans, non-binary, and Two-Spirit community college students, and offers a scaffolding model that allows colleges to increase supports based on their current campus and community cultures and levels of resources. The TRANScend Toolkit is a living toolkit that can easily adapt alongside our changing world.

Who is our Intended Audience?

This toolkit is geared for California Community College employees who have a direct role in planning for and implementing initiatives that aid in trans, non-binary, and Two Spirit students’ academic success.

While students are welcome to utilize this toolkit, their main focus at college should be on their studies, not on creating the educational environments and culture needed for their optimal success.
